The Essentials
When I think about my wardrobe, I think of packing a suitcase. I want a group of clothes that can go interchangeably into the suitcase and give me a collection of outfits that can be worn for many occasions, in many different ways.
I’m not minimalist enough to ever enjoy a capsule wardrobe, but the concept is similar.
Invest in some solid basics
Layer in a couple of fun pieces seasonally (this is where we add color! pattern! on-trend details!)
Switch things up by how you pair the pieces, and by adding in some solid accessories
In order to actually wear these pieces for years, these will mostly be in good neutral colors. And just know that if it’s white (a white tee, white denim), you will need to replace it much more often as those things can get real dingy, real fast.
You also need to think about comfort here. Your staples shouldn’t be things that pain you to put on. This is where you invest in the right material, and take the time to find a cut that feels best on your body type. My closet staples are truly that - the pieces I wear time and time again. You probably have your own version of this, but if you’re looking for a place to start, here are mine.
Beyond the essentials, here’s what I’m adding in for spring…
Gap cargo pants. Go for the cargo - they are sticking around, you can pull it off, and you will be super comfortable with this relaxed fit! I wear these with an oversized sweater + white sneakers now, and will pair with a simple tank + strappy sandals in the summer. If you take my advice on anything, buy yourself some comfy cargos.
Ballet flats. You won’t look like a 4 year old. I promise! Ballets add a feminine touch to simple outfits, and they are comfortable enough for all day wear. If you’re dipping your toe in for the first time, go for a classic color. If you’re here for some fun, I’m loving them in silver.
This body suit. Cute, simple, and the price is right.
PS - Over the next few months, I’ll be diving into each of my closet essentials, and sharing my current favorite finds. And if there are any topics or questions you want me to cover - holler. I’d love to hear from you!
