Hi, and happy June! The month that ushers in sweet summertime, and the longest days of the year. This morning, I sat out on our backporch sipping coffee while my kids ate breakfast. It was quiet and peaceful, there was a little breeze through the trees, and I asked aloud why it can’t be summer forever.
This month, I’m focusing more on color. I think we collectively got lazy for a few years, and we built monochromatic wardrobes under the guise of “elevated staples” that will last forever. I say “we”, because I definitely followed and even taught this strategy to my friends. But the people whose style I admire the most take risks, wear the good colors, and throw on the fun accessories.
There’s this common misconception that colors will go out of style, so buying neutrals mean your wardrobe will last forever. But frankly, color never goes out of style. It just gives you more opportunity to layer and play in your wardrobe.
If you’re minimal at heart, you can still do this in a palatable way. Take this look from last week’s newsletter:
Dress, Summer Bag, Necklace, Sandals, and my favorite sunnies
A classic black dress and simple flip flops. But the accessories pop the outfit and make it feel more considered, and more fun.
The next level after committing to color in your accessories? Color in your outfit! Matching sets make this super easy in my opinion. But beyond the obvious sets, here are a few ways I’m throwing in color.
Gathered Tank, Necklace, Sunglasses, Bag, Ballerina Flats, Pink Shorts
We’re playing with proportion and textures and PINK. I’ve been eyeing these shorts, and if I weren’t pregnant, they would be mine. They’re sporty and they’re girly — win/win in my book. Obviously you can go simple with a tank or tee or button down here, but I love the juxtaposition with a nicer top and ballerinas. Keep it from being too sweet by adding more fun colors — lime green bag! purple sunnies! The possibilities are endless.
Shirt, Necklace, Sunglasses, Woven Bag, Sandals, Shorts (they are a steal!)
I own these gingham shorts, and I love them. I wear them on weekends when I’m lounging, but I also love pairing with a button down (only buttoning a couple buttons!), and then adding pops of colors just in the accessories. A fun necklace is essential (and the fish is removable so you can wear it year round).
Button Down, Skirt, Tank, Necklace, Sunglasses, Woven Bag, Sandals
Saving my favorite for last! I’m always inspired by J.Crew’s use of color, and this shirt and skirt combo is just perfection. Again, you can style the shirt over the skirt — the flowy top and fitted bottom will balance well. The accessories are classics and ground the rest of the look.
QUICK HITS before we go…
I’m taking this set to the beach this week, will report back on my results!
If you’ve been thinking about trying Ubeauty but haven’t yet, I think their OOO Set is the best way to see what your favorites are! I’m most excited to try the Resurfacing Compound. The before and afters speak for themselves.
I’ve been blazing through books lately… All the Colors of the Dark, Sandwich, and most recently Audition. Has anyone read!? Very much a book club worthy book… I need to discuss!
Okay, that’s it for today! Let me know any colorful pieces you’re loving from above or from your own closet. And send book recs! I’ll be beaching it this week, hopefully with time to read while the kids nap in the afternoons.
xx
